More Than Just Technical Skills—How to Stand Out and Get Hired

The path to becoming a data analyst can be unclear, but it doesn't have to be. When I talk with my students or anyone curious about breaking into this field, I share a simple but important truth: landing a data analyst role is more than just technical skills.

Yes, you need to know your

• Descriptive statistics

• Spreadsheets (Excel, Google Sheet)

• Business metrics

• SQL, And

• Visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI.

You need to be hirable. and to be hirable takes more. Here’s the roadmap to making yourself stand out:

1. Show, Don’t Just Tell

It’s not enough to list skills on a resume; you have to demonstrate them:

• Build Projects: Create projects that showcase your abilities in all these technical areas.

• Showcase Your Work: Share these projects on GitHub, your personal website, or LinkedIn to show employers what you can do.

2. Connect and Prepare

Alongside your technical foundation, develop these core career skills:

• Network: Connect with others in the industry and build relationships.

• Practice Interviews: Use techniques like the STAR method to master interview responses.

• Tailor Your Resume: Each role is unique, so tailor your resume to match the specific skills each job requires.
